Weird But Wonderful Colorado Attractions

We make tracks to Colorado and take in its towering alpine peaks, snow dusted landscapes, and spectacularly odd tourist attractions. In fact, this just might be the strangest place we've encountered yet:

1.Buckskin Joe's Live Hangings: Cannon City, Colorado The death penalty has long been a fixture of American justice, and here you can witness a live hanging, then snap a photo of the unfortunate victim as he swings lifelessly from his noose. The perfect post card to send home to mom. If your jaw just dropped in horror, relax, the hangings are merely the dramatic climax of a three minute Wild West show, showing us how justice was once restored in the frontier. If you didn't get the full essence of the public execution experience the first time around, you can always hang around for another. The shows run every 30 minutes.

2. Junkrassic Park: Cheraw, Colorado Behold, a land where objects fashioned out of recycled metal farm implements roam free. It may not sound like a premise for a blockbuster movie, but it's none the less a place worth digging in to. Fortunate park visitors will encounter a colorful collection of twisted metal species including re-creations of Fidel Castro, John Wayne and Colorado football legend John Elway. Finish off your tour by sharing a romantic kiss in front of the 40 foot Eiffel Tower replica. Bring along a baguette and a bottle of wine, and you'll think its the real thing.

3. Two Floor Outhouse: Crested Bute, Colorado When you gotta go, you gotta go to Crested Bute's split level outhouse; one bathroom on the bottom floor and one on the top. Engineered to weather the heavy snowfalls of the Colorado winter, this local landmark has stood tall since the mid 1800's, a relic of the town's contributions to toilet innovation. While you are free to wonder the bathroom's 1st and 2nd floors, we recommend you stay out of the basement.

4. Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant: Denver, Colorado Come on down to Denver's Buckhorn Restaurant and dine with friends, family and over 500 dead animals. While the stuffed bison, elk, and pheasants can't actually talk to you, they will make for an evening of great conversation. The true novelty is that just about anything you see stuck to the wall, can be ordered for dinner. Just imagine biting into a juicy buffalo burger while waving to his stuffed cousin above. "Hi Buffalo Bill, your cousins delicious!"

5. Colorado's "Cannibal Trail": Denver, Colorado Meet Alfred Packer, a former mining prospector and cannibal, with a taste for gold and human flesh. While he passed away over 100 years ago, his unsavory legacy remains fresh. Accused of killing and eating at least five fellow humans, several Colorado attractions now pay homage to Packer along the Cannibal trail; including museums, a grave site and yes even a café (though human was yet on the menu). After being acquitted of his alleged crimes because of a technicality, Packer ironically became a vegetarian. Proof positive of the human ability to change.

Things To Do In Denver Colorado

Once seen as the domain of cowboys and oilmen, today the mile-high metropolis is a cosmopolitan mix of natural beauty and world-class hotels, entertainment and attractions. The Denver Art Museum houses one of the finest collections of American Indian art in the world. The city is also the official home of four national teams: the Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies and Avalanche, meaning every season is sports season. Even with all the big town glitz, Denver has managed to maintain its earthiness. Outdoor recreation is still a major draw. With 205 parks in city limits and 20,000 acres of parks in the nearby mountains, there is ample opportunity for hiking, biking, mountain climbing and more. Families visiting Denver won't know where to begin. The Zoo, the Children's Museum and the Botanic Gardens offer hours of entertainment. Or pop by the United States Mint for a free tour. To prove that Denver really is "The Mile High City," head to the State Capitol. There's a spot on the west steps of the building that is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level.

Denver CO Hotels and Resorts Ranks #1, The Denver Marriott Residence Inn City Center is downtown Denver`s newest all suite hotel. Easily walk to the Colorado Convention Center, downtown Denver restaurants, shopping and entertainment including United Artist Theatres, Six Flags, Larimer Square, Great American Beer Fest or one of Colorado`s local breweries such as Wyncoop and Breckenridge Brewery. We also offer a convenient location to Denver Bronco`s, Colorado Avalanche or Rockies baseball games. Qwest, Xcel, Sprint, Denver Federal Government Building, Deloitte and Accenture are only a few of the many local offices within walking distance. Or how about a day of world-class skiing? In an hour or less you can be at any of the Vail Resort properties or other Colorado Ski areas. Whether you are here for a short business trip, family vacation or relocating to Denver and need temporary housing, come stay with us and experience first hand the comforts and "service so memorable" you have come to rely on from The Residence Inn by Marriott.

Denver Taqueria Patzcuaro is an unsung gem of a joint dishing up authentic Mexican fare in a no-frills atmosphere. Located in north Denver in a stretch of town bursting with Mexican bakeries, shops and cafes Patzcuaro is a local favorite for a casual and inexpensive taste. Seat yourself at this unpretentious spot serving lunch and dinner, and complimentary chips and salsa are served as soon as you sit down. An entire wall is lined with the menacing faces of Mexican revolutionaries. But don't let the staring eyes distress you. You know you're far from the ultra-Americanized Taco Bell when the menu offers dishes such as taco cabeza (beef cheek meat), chuletas a la Mexicana (pork chops swimming in a spicy chile) and pescado a la Mexican (fish filet cooked with olive oil, tomato, onion and jalapeno). Still, timid diners can find safety in familiar burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas and more. The Bull & Bush Pub and Brewery, Denver's Bull & Bush mirrors Britain's best pubs, down to its cozy furnishings and characteristic memorabilia. Guests revel in the comfortable, dim interior as well as in the microwbrews, which flow freely and are apt complements to authentic plates of fish and chips. Multiple televisions keep visitors abreast of the latest happenings in the sports arena, and well-prepared pub fare keeps them sustained when the competition grows keen.

Attractions among the recommended attractions are Denver Art Museum, known for its wide range of Native American art, this museum also contains the only major Asian art collection in the Rocky Mountains. The Denver Art Museum is a private, non-profit, educational resource for Colorado.  The mission of the museum is to enrich the lives of Colorado and Rocky Mountain residents through the acquisition, preservation, and presentation of art works in both the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, and by supporting these works with exemplary educational and scholarly programs.

Denver Art Galleries Evolution

Denver is fast emerging as the hot new 'art and culture destination' on the cultural map of USA. It may not have reached the cultural heights of New York yet but it's morphed into an art and culture capital of the Rockies anyway. From one art gallery back in the 60s to over 120 commercial art galleries now, with a program in place for Public Art valued at over $ 23 million in year 2006 and an impressive collection of over 300 public artworks installed all over the city, while most cities have two or four important museums on its city roster; Denver has an impressive list of more than fifteen and counting. That's not all, most cities boast of one or two art districts at the most, while Denver has six thriving ones! The credit for this entire cultural renaissance goes back to a number of factors.

First and foremost to the residents themselves who back in 1988 voted and passed a 0.1 percent sales tax to fund cultural activity around the entire metropolitan of Denver. The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District tax raises around $ 40 million annually for local art, theater, music and dance organizations and natural and cultural history sites. The credit also goes to ever-popular two-term mayor John Hickenlooper who is an art buff in his own right and has supported arts and culture across the board; he is responsible for the major cultural coup of getting the Clyfford Still Museum Denver established in Colorado, (ground breaking ceremony planned for December 14th 2009). Still (1904-1980) is a world-renowned much sought after Expressionist artist - a single Still painting recently sold for over $20 million at an auction for example.Mayor Federico Pena is credited with the establishment of Denver's Public Art Program back in 1998 via an Executive Order, ensuring that 1 percent of any capital improvement project over 1 million should be set aside for art in the design and construction of these projects.Denver may have started with one art district on the west end of the Platte River, near downtown but now it boasts of six. Raised rents and gentrification of newer art districts from Broadway to lower downtown (LoDo) to Santa Fe to RiNo to Belmar to Tennyson Street to Cherry Creek North has meant the dispersion of local artists, multiple art districts and decentralized art community which in turn has contributed to a thriving art scene.

The art movement in Denver is not cut-throat and competitive like most arty environments of large metropolitan cities, nor is it judgmental and cynical, instead it's characterized as open, collaborative and participative willing to inject a note of humor and whimsy in its selections. The whole city contributes from its art and culture organizations to its residents to its city government and art institutions to its art community, making it a fun and vibrant city intent on having a good time. This could be because as Hickenlooper once put it, Denver is unusual and unique in that people move there not for jobs but for its superior 'quality of life,' and a 'vigorous cultural scene' is a big part of that expectation. Some of the milestone cultural capital projects of Denver that opened between the period of four years 2005-2009 are: Elli Caulkins Opera House, The Lab at Belmar, The Denver Art Museum's new wing Fredric C. Hamilton Building, Center for Empowering Learning and Living, a project of the Mizel Museum located at the Civic Center, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and Clyfford Still Museum.

Not that, Denver was devoid of culture before this, the city already had an impressive base of arts and culture, for example, Denver Performing Arts Complex featuring ten performance spaces on a four-block, 12-acre site, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS), it is the fifth largest natural history museum in the nation, the Denver Zoo, it is the fourth most popular zoo in the country, Denver Botanic Gardens, it is one of the top ten western gardens in the nation. Denver hosts one of the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. Parades, Cinco de Mayo celebrations and Native American pow-wows in the county, not to mention the Cherry CreekArts Festival Denver, it is number one arts festival in county based on artists' sales.

Denver gets a high score based on one survey of marketable, discretionary visitors for the city's choice for entertainment, pro sports events, theatre and the arts, nightlife, the variety of things to see and do, museums, art galleries, parks, gardens and golf courses, interesting architecture, landmarks, shopping, dining, recreation and outdoorsy, mountain activities like skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking and what not. So what's not to like when you drop by to catch an art show, you might get more than you bargained for which is all to the good. More fun for you!

There were so many vending machines at the rest area that made it felt so appealing! We then continued driving down the dark tunnel underneath the mountain. You had to walk miles through the rest area to see all the attractions. There were vending machines and other elements about the underground rest area that made it so appealing. We also drove down the mountain through a dark tunnel. Denver Real Estate Offers Attractive Options

Denver is the capital of Colorado, lying east of the Rocky Mountains Front Range, at an elevation of 5,280 feet. The population was around 598,700 in 2008. The city sprawls in an area of 401.3 square kilometers. Denver was established as a mining town in 1858 when the Pikes Peak Gold Rush created history in western Kansas. The city is located in a 'bowl' and hence is protected from strong winds and severe cold. The climate is semi-arid. Denver City and County possesses 79 neighborhoods. The city has a varying character, with houses from the beginning of the twentieth century lying alongside suburban style, modern development areas and large skyscrapers. The older brick buildings are denser in the city center, while the neighborhoods away from the center contain modern structures.Denver is a growing metropolis.

The Denver real estate scene is quite attractive. The office buildings, restaurants, shopping centers, and entertainment venues are situated in downtown of Denver. This area is a thriving one but also safe and clean. The heart of downtown offers condominiums, lofts, town homes, and single-family homes for aspiring homebuyers. Cherry Creek, Crestmoor, Belcaro, Bonnie Brae, Hilltop, Washington Park, Denver Country Club, and Polo Club are highly exclusive communities around downtown. Prices of condominiums and homes in this area are priced around $400 to $500 per square foot.If you prefer a lifestyle of high-rise condominium, LoDo, near the Coors Field area, is the best one. Other areas near LoDo are Curtis Park, Highlands, Riverfront, and Golden Triangle. They are also developing rapidly and offer ample scope for developers to plan neighborhoods and homes. Curtis Park and Highlands are witnessing the renovation of old historic houses. Apart from Golden Triangle, Baker, Regis, and City Park are also undergoing renovations.Cherry Hills and Greenwood Village are among the affluent suburbs in south Denver. Cherry Creek, Centennial, Aurora, Englewood, and Littleton are the other suburbs. All of them have lots of open space and very low crime rate.

However, the biggest attraction for people relocating to Denver is Highlands Ranch, the largest planned community area in Denver. This neighborhood lies between Arapahoe and Douglas counties. The community is a mixture of suburban neighborhoods and rural sections and is an ideal place for Denver homes for sale. The suburbs of Lakewood and Westminster lie in the west of Denver. This area is a combination of old homes and new construction. The nearby foothills have the suburbs of Morrison, Evergreen, and Conifer. These could be termed as mountain communities, with excellent views, golf courses, trails, and gravel roads. The northern suburbs include Broomfield, Louisville, Boulder, and Lafayette, with housing and shopping opportunities. Another area with old and new structures abounding side by side contains the communities of Northglenn, Thornton, Commerce City, and Brighton. As such, Denver real estate agents and Thornton real estate offer ample scope for developers and home seekers.

Denver homes for sale are mostly affordable and the recent slump in real estate prices had made investment in Denver real estate more attractive.
